End of Year Wrap Up!

It’s been quite a year for us here at the RDBJJ Academy.  So much has happened this year that we don’t have enough space to write it all, but some of the most amazing news has come just in the last 4 months.

In August we moved to our new facilty which more than doubled the space we had in Telford which allowed us to have more mat space, a pro-shop and many other amenities.

In October we had Royler Gracie out for what turned out to be our biggest seminar ever with 52 members in attendance.  We also promoted several individuals including three black belts.

November started off with our kids program, and we had our first yellow belt, my son Jake, who after many years of training tested for his yellow.  Coming soon we’ll be posting a video of his test.

Rick Royce and Brett Hoover both opened their own training facilities, we wish them both all the best of luck.

And finally to all our new members since our arrival in Chalfont:
John Taube
Brian Plajer
Fred Koslowksi
Paul Blackway
Gerald Laird
Andrew McCarthy
Jason Kifner
Patrick Benner

2010 looks to be even better with the establishment of new programs, some exciting events and the growth of our academy.  Hope you all can make it in to visit us.  All the best to you in this new year!

Armlock from the Guard

The armlock from the guard, like the x-choke, is one of the basic submissions taught to all beginners.  The armlock is an extremely powerful submission primarily because it utilizes the entire body to put pressure on the elbow of the opponent.  Done right, it can be an extremely useful tool, should you find yourself on your back with an opponent on top of you.  Let’s look at some of the mechanics of how to apply a very tight armlock.

1.  With your legs wrapped around your opponent (guard position). Take your left hand and cup the back of your opponents right elbow.  Now with your right hand grab the wrist of the same hand.

2.  Moving your hip slightly to the left as you release your lock with your legs, place your left foot on your opponent’s right hip.

3.  At this point you want to ensure that your are pressing your opponent’s arm tight to your chest.  Take your right leg and place it as high on your opponent’s back as you can, you will find that your body will start to turn to allow you to get to that higher position.  Once you’ve gotten that leg up high, clamp it down on his back, tight!

4.  Back to your left foot.  Now it’s time to start to angle off, while keeping the pressure downwards with your right leg, start to push on his hip with your left foot.  You will find yourself turning so that you and your opponent begin to look like a “T”, that’s if you were looking at it from above.
*The key point here is that the more you turn and try to make that “T”, the less you’ll struggle in getting your left leg to go over his head for the finish.

5.  Once the “T” is established, you’ll be able to simply take your left leg and place it over the opponent’s head.

6.  For the finish:  Your body must do several things at once; squeeze your knees together as tight as you can, keep that grip on your opponent’s arm, begin to lift your hip like you were doing a bridging excercise, except that your feet aren’t on the ground, your support is his body.

Now it’s just a matter of extending the bridge until you’ve put enough pressure on his arm to make him submit.

Kids Jiu-Jitsu

At the Rosendo Diaz Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy we offer Kid’s Jiu-Jitsu and Teen’s Jiu-Jitsu programs.

The type of martial art taught at the academy decended from Japan and was adapted for real world self defense by Helio Gracie.  Master Gracie’s concepts allowed a smaller person, utilizing leverage, to defeat a larger strong opponent.

The discipline and self confidence that kids aquire in our programs empowers them to more effectively handle problems including bullying.  We help kids develop active, healthy lifestyles and build character, self-esteem and interpersonal skills necessary for peaceful conflict resolution while stressing the importance of safety.  But more importantly to them, they’ll be having fun, getting fit and learning one of the most effective and powerful martial arts being taught today.

What sets Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu apart from other martial arts is it’s empahsis on practicality and real-world performance.  Your child in not going to memorize forms or kata.  They will not learn to chop and kick the air or break boards.  They are going to learn realistic and proven techniques for self defense, just like adults, in a fun, friendly and safe atmosphere.

Call today, we’ll be happy to set up an introductory lesson for your child.  We are conveniently located in Telford which is within minutes of Quakertown, Perkasie, Sellersville, Souderton, Harleysville, Lansdale, Doylestown, Montgomeryville and the Lehigh Valley.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
The Gracie family developed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the mid 1900’s. BJJ, put simply, is traditional Jiu-Jitsu/Judo modified to meet the demands of real, no rules, fighting that was prevalent in the streets of Brazil.

What is the difference between Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and BJJ?
BJJ’s concentration on ground fighting skills and constant live practice differentiates it from most Japanese Jiu-Jitsu systems. BJJ was not created in a vacuum and you will find many of the positions and techniques in other traditional systems, but BJJ specialization on ground fighting is unique.

If my opponent is bigger and stronger than me, won’t he always beat me?
Especially when you first begin training and your arsenal of techniques is limited (as well as your understanding and “feel” for positioning) the stronger, faster opponent will dominate. This is natural, however, the emphasis in BJJ is not on superior athleticism but on using leverage, balance and pressure to control and ultimately submit a larger, stronger opponent. This is the ideal goal of Jiu-Jitsu. If you do not make a commitment from early on to concentrate on developing your skills but rather always relying on your natural abilities, your development will hit a plateau very quickly and you will never gain a greater understanding of Jiu-Jitsu and your own potential.

How long does it take to get ranked in BJJ?
This varies greatly from club to club, team to team, instructor to instructor, and most importantly, from individual to individual. Skill in Jiu-Jitsu is gained from experience and proper technical application not by how many moves you know. Every person will progress according to his own abilities and goals. Though there are many exceptions, the average time is approximately 1-1.5 years to blue belt, 3 years from blue to purple belt, 3 years from purple to brown bel t and then 3-5 years to gain your black belt. The average committed student can expect a journey of 10-12 years to gain the black belt.

The Royler Gracie-David Adiv Jiu-Jitsu Team ranking is as follows:

• White belt
• White belt 1-4 stripes
• Blue belt
• Purple belt
• Brown belt
• Black belt
