Royler Gracie’s Final Match in MMA

Huge congratulations to Royler Gracie for stepping into the ring one last time against a very skilled and seasoned  Masakatsu Ueda at the Amazon Forest Combat event held this past weekend.

Royler stepped into the ring against an opponent who has only seen defeat once in his career and has won his last 3 MMA matches against top players such as Rumina Sato and Eduardo Dantas.

Royler is a true warrior and champion of the Gracie Family.  We at the Rosendo Diaz Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy and Team 3rd Generation wish Master Gracie all the best and look forward to his continued teachings.

Who Makes The Best Student

In my years of teaching Jiu-Jitsu to hundreds of students, I have found that each person brings his own set of skills, knowledge and ability into the academy.  Each of those qualities helps the student to improve over time, while some may see success almost immediately, the majority of students need time to understand the techniques taught and drill those moves so that over time they become reaction rather than thought.
Typically, those interested in learning Jiu-Jitsu can be broken down into 3 major categories.
The Empty Cup
These are people who have interest in learning the Jiu-Jitsu for sport, MMA or self defense who have no prior training in the martial arts or wrestling.  Having no prior experience can be a plus to learning Jiu-Jitsu in terms of being more accepting of the “fight strategy” that Jiu-Jitsu employs.  As well, those with no experience generally come into the academy with a great interest, having seen our art used in the UFC and other MMA type events.  They understand the effectiveness of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and tend to have a great deal of trust in the techniques of the art, having trust in the techniques can often be one of the biggest parts of becoming a good Jiu-Jitsu player.
The Black Belt
These are students that come in with some amount of experience in other arts such as; Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Judo, Aikido and Kung Fu to name but a few.  There are many advantages to having prior experience in other martial arts such as having an established training discipline as well Martial Artist tend to have excellent coordination and can easily begin to develop their ground skills rather quickly. In many instances, many of the martial artist that come to our academy are looking to add the ground or takedown game to their existing arsenal of stand up fighting techniques.  This is one of the best parts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as it does not attempt to convert a practitioner away from their tried and true method of self defense, instead it only looks to add to it by providing the practitioner with valuable information that their current art may not fully cover.
The Wrestler
High school and collegiate wrestlers have the most success at the beginning of their training.  Wrestlers already bring in a deep understanding of takedowns as well as controlling and transitioning movements on the ground.  Wrestlers also bring in an intensity that is hard to match.  Their coordination for the ground game is already in place in most cases and in short order once they understand the “rules” of how we approach the fight on the ground can modify their wrestling to enhance the techniques they will learn in our academy.
In the end, each individual regardless of their experience or athletic ability brings his own skill set and ability to learn and accept the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu.  Some students “get it” quickly while others take some time, but in the end I can say that I’ve never had a student who was not able to use the techniques successfully.  Every person who is interested in learning the art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and commits to it will in the end find success on the mats.

Arm Lock Week is Coming!

Starting Monday, September 5 it’s Armlock week at the Rosendo Diaz Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy.  Each month we take a position, transition, submission and we train it until you’ve taken your game up to the next level.  There’s nothing better than focusing on a specific technique, training it and ingraining it into your mind, that helps to improve your overall skills.

So come on out on the 5th and for those of you considering our academy..take that week and the next and take advantage of this great opportunity to “kick the tires” so to speak.  Get in some great fitness training, learn effective self defense and expand your mind at the Rosendo Diaz Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy located in the heart of Bucks County.

Helicopter Arm Bar from the Guard, Video Instructional

In Gracie Jiu Jitsu, one the most demonstrated moves is the Helicopter Arm Bar.  Apart from being somewhat flashy it also represents the idea of technique and leverage over strength to accomplish one’s goals.  In the following video instructional, Rosendo Diaz, breaks down the basics of how to apply this arm bar.

Jiu Jitsu Classes for Ages 11 to 14

dsc_0048

As our children move on from grade school onto middle school and beyond there becomes a greater need for the development of better fitness and focus.  Training in Gracie Jiu Jitsu doesn’t just give your kids the ability and self confidence to defend themselves, it also provides them with a better sense of self worth as well as self discipline.

Training at the Rosendo Diaz Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy is exciting for the kids but it’s also easy for parents.  We offer “no contracts”, only month to month agreements.  So if you child is involved with sports during certain times of the year you can feel assured that you won’t be paying for time not spent training and learning at our academy.  Our teen/pre-teen classes are for kids ages 11 to 14 and run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 7pm.

Training in Jiu Jitsu is actually very reasonable.  The type of training we provide removes the need of the purchase of expensive sparring equipment.  The only thing your child will need is a Jiu Jitsu Gi (uniform) and the enthusiasm to learn the most effective style of martial arts being taught today.

The Rosendo Diaz Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy is located in Chalfont, PA on the corner of Rt. 202 and Rt. 152 North.  We are within minutes of Doylestown, Sellersville, Perkasie, Lansdale and North Wales.

Stop in today and have your child try out our classes for 2 weeks for free.  For more information regarding our programs please email us at heelhook21@aol.com or call us at 267.476.1858
