Belt Promotions and Tying The Belt Ceremony

So why do we at the 3G Team tie knots into our belt?

Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to train with many instructors at many different academies and was able to witness their promotion ceremonies. Each one had their own distinct style.

Some ran their students through a gauntlet while others used extremely creative methods to surprise them. Some were such big academies that there was no surprise in it for the students but these academies created large events to celebrate the accomplishments. Each for me was impressive.

The reasons why we tie knots into our belts goes back to the early 90’s. I was watching a friend that taught another style of ju-jitsu go through his promotion ceremony. This was what I call my “caveman Jiu-Jitsu” days, which is another story altogether. I can’t honestly remember what it meant or even if he explained to me what the relevance was for them, but I immediately saw significance in that knot.

It wasn’t until 2003 when I earned my black belt and started doing my own promotion ceremonies that I started using this method. In those ten years between seeing this knotting of the belt and actually using it for my own promotions, I developed my own theories of what it means. So with that let’s get to it.

What’s the point of the knot? I’ve got three reasons.

1. It signifies the “locking in” of the information and really serves as a reminder of the experiences and lessons learned during that time in the belt.

2. The tightening of the knot by the instructor and student signifies the bond not only between the two but also the bonds of the brotherhood/sisterhood of Jiu-Jitsu as a whole. At the higher ranks, not only the instructor but also training partners of higher, lesser or equal rank are invited to take part. Once you achieve that high a rank in Jiu-Jitsu it is not solely the instructor that got you to where you are but anyone and everyone you have trained with and learned from that got you to where you are.

3. The strands vs. the loop. Summed up, the one being promoted is the strands; a disorderly mess of techniques. The loop represents those that have worked to bring order or flow to your movements. The instructor or those who took part in your development hold the loop; they bring order and understanding to your Jiu-Jitsu. The student holds the strands, his disorder, his mess of techniques. Together they tighten the knot, locking in what they know and with the hope of some day attaining some level of perfection of movement.

Preemptive Self Defense

It started with a bump on the shoulder.

We’d run into each other accidentally, but in this day and age, it doesn’t take much more than that to escalate into something more.

Without even thinking, I’d grabbed his hand as if to shake it and placed my opposite hand on his shoulder.

“Hey, I’m so sorry,” I said. “Are you okay?”

Though my apology and tone definitely helped defuse any potential situation, my lack of fear in initiating physical contact with him helped even more.

Forget the fact that I put myself in a position to defend myself by grabbing his hand and shoulder. It was that we’re so unused to being comfortable with that type of contact. We don’t know what to do when it happens.

Jiu jitsu solves that problem.

Rolling with partners you trust, allowing yourself to be in those sometimes uncomfortable positions and situations takes away that apprehension.

And not just for adults. It’s never too early to learn to remove that fear.

If this hits home, for either you or someone you care about, email us at or stop in to our new location.

Jiu Jitsu Conversation

Jiu jitsu should be like a conversation.

When you’re new to BJJ, every roll is a shouting match, where no matter what, you have to be right. When you’re with another white belt, it’s an argument no one is winning.

As time goes on, and your experience grows, your voice quiets down somewhat. You still want to be right all the time, but you learn to listen to the other, more experienced side, too. You even laugh as you see some of yourself in the newer students who follow.

At the highest level is when the best conversations happen. No one needs to be the loudest or the smartest. There are no arguments here. Only discussions. A thoughtful back and forth where both sides win, no matter the actual outcome.

Our Academy is Celebrating our 20th Year.

The Rosendo Diaz Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy opened its doors in 1996 and never looked back. Over the years we have trained and taught men, women and children how to defend and feel confident about themselves.  We’ve taught law enforcement officers the most up to date defensive tactics. We’ve helped our students become champions both on and off the mat.  But most importantly, we’ve carried the flag and helped spread the word for the most effective martial arts in the world, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

This 20th year we are celebrating by offering you 3 months of unlimited training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for only $149.00, we’ll also throw in a pretty cool t-shirt.

Jiu Jitsu Vs The World Documentary

Heard about Jiu-Jitsu but you don’t know the first thing about it?  Maybe you don’t think it’s for you?  Guess again!  Take a look at this exciting and informative documentary that helps explain what Jiu-Jitsu is and helps dispel many of the myths associated with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Remember, you don’t have to be a fighter in the UFC to learn BJJ.  Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was developed for regular people to help them be prepared to defend themselves.

Success Takes Time

We talk a lot in the Jiu-Jitsu community about the health benefits training in BJJ provides but what happens is we get so focused on the actual training and the lifestyle that we don’t see the effects Jiu-Jitsu has on the body. Then 5 or 6 years later someone reminds you of what you looked like when you first started….

Dan Katz started at our academy back in April of 2010. The photo of Dan doing the Captain Morgan was taken 2 months prior to starting at our academy. He weighed 220lbs. The other photo is much more recent but Danny has been in excellent shape for several years now, he averages around 150lbs.

That’s what is so great about BJJ, it’s about truth on the mat. At 220lbs Danny couldn’t move on the ground, he would get tired and winded fast. Jiu-Jitsu brings out a truth that the latest work out craze or the treadmill that now doubles as a clothing rack doesn’t.  The truth is if you are getting on that treadmill or that workout video a couple times a week or as time allows, you’re really not making a change.  You’re what I call “maintaining a feeling of a healthy lifestyle”.  Yes you are doing well for the health of your heart, but you’re not making a substantial change to yourself.

Whether Dan knew it or not, he embraced the BJJ lifestyle.  He looked at himself and realized he needed to eat a healthier diet, he needed to improve his cardio, he needed to strengthen his muscles, and he needed to improve his flexibility.  Of course these things didn’t happen overnight, they happened slowly as a result of the truth he was experiencing on the mat during training.

Today, Dan is a purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu, has done extremely well in competition and is an instructor of our beginners program.

You don’t need to be in good shape to start Jiu-Jitsu, you just have to want to make a change.  Find your own truth and embrace a healthy lifestyle not because someone told you on TV that in 30 days you would be a new you…The reality is that change takes time, but more importantly it takes motivation. “If you have a passion for a thing, then that thing gives you all the motivation you need” That’s the truth of Jiu-Jitsu.

Call or stop in today, take 2 weeks free to try out our classes and meet our members.

No Excuse Not To

Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just about learning to defend yourself.  It’s about fitness, it’s about a healthy lifestyle, it’s about developing friendship, it’s about being part of a global family, it’s about being part of a team, it’s about changing your life, it’s about who you are and who you want to be.
